4. MOVING ON****

From Scott Settlemire, Troop 254 Warren****

Eight years ago I was asked if I would be willing to be a Bear Den Leader
for Pack 254. My son was going to be a Bear and I agreed to "try it for a
year". I was so nervous before my first Den meeting that I felt ill. I
wanted everything to go perfectly. I did not want to let the boys down.
Much to my surprise, being a den leader eventually got easier and even
became fun. Two and a half years later five scouts, Paul Galipeau and I
crossed over together and formed Troop 254. ****

****

The more experienced scouters must have smiled when they saw me doing what
I thought a scoutmaster should do. Our first summer camp (2007) felt a bit
like boot camp. Starting a troop with a group of ten and eleven year olds
was a challenge. I was waaaaay too intense. Some time went by and we all
learned and gained experience. At the 2009 Fall Camporee Steve Saucier,
the DE District Executive, passed by the Troop 254 camp site to find Paul
Galipeau and I sitting in our camp chairs drinking coffee while the scouts
went about setting up camp and cooking supper. He shook my hand and told
me, "Scott, you've come a long way". We had a good laugh. ****

****

Troop 254 has become a boy lead unit. Often our troop outings and meetings
appear to be bordering on chaos. In the end the boys get it done and they
do it their way. There boys who at each rank between Scout and Life now.
The troop continues to grow and the boys have a good time (most of the
time). Things are going pretty well. ****

****

Before I leave, I would like to say a few thank you's. Thanks to Luther
Younce for being my mentor. Luther has taught me a lot and tried to keep me
on track. Thank you to Paul Galipeau who has been with me in Troop 254
since the beginning. We've shared a tent many nights and drank a lot of
coffee together. Thank you to the Troop 254 Assistant Scoutmasters: Patrick
Blum, Vern Bradeen, Paul Shelmerdine, & Gabe Cole. Your willingness to step
up and get involved is very much appreciated. Thank you to all of you have
participated in training events, helped run roundtables, served on the
troop committee, and all other other numerous functions and services
invovled with the Scouting movement. Thanks to my wife and family for your
understanding and patience. Most of all, thank you to the scouts. It has
been fun traveling a distance along the scouting path with you. ****

****

I will miss my Maine scouting friends. ****

Sincerely, ****
